Most immigration and nationality fees frozen for 2019/20

Most immigration and nationality fees frozen for 2019/20

The updated list of fees for immigration and nationality applications that apply from 29 March 2019 shows that most remain unchanged from this year.

The amount the Home Office has been charging to process visa, settlement and citizenship applications has risen steadily above inflation for many years. This year, against expectations, they are generally unchanged, although with the immigration health surcharge doubling at the start of the year many applicants will pay more in 2019 than they did in 2018.

There are small increases in visit visa fees and larger ones to some premium services. Fees for the new innovator and start-up visas have been set at the same rate at their predecessors, the graduate and graduate entrepreneur routes.

The Home Office still makes a hefty profit on these fees. A migrant applying for indefinite leave to remain in the UK must pay £2,389. The cost to the Home Office of processing an ILR application is £243 — so the fee is set at ten times higher than the actual administrative cost. A Tier 2 work visa for someone working in a “shortage occupation”, where the UK is desperate for workers, has an administrative cost of £127 but is charged at up to £928.

Most outrageous is the application fee for registering a child as British. The fee in 2019/20 is still over £1,000, but the actual cost is £372. Over the past five years this fee alone has generated a £100 million surplus for the Home Office. It is easy to see why some campaigners are less than thrilled at the prospect of a mere freeze.

It is not just individual migrants who are being squeezed for fees. The Immigration Skills Charge Regulations 2017 impose on employers who recruit foreign workers from outside the EU a charge of £1,000 per worker per year. A lower charge of £364 per worker per year is applicable to small businesses and universities and some exemptions apply. The charge only applies to new recruits, not existing ones.
