Above-inflation increase in immigration and nationality fees for 2018/19

Above-inflation increase in immigration and nationality fees for 2018/19

New fees for immigration and nationality applications came into effect on 6 April 2018 and a slightly expanded list of fees applies from 8 October 2018. This post, originally published in April but now updated to reflect those mid-year additions, shows the fees for 2018/19.

Overall the rates this year represent an increase on the charges for 2017/18, although the rise was not so swingeing as in the past. The eye-watering price of a dependent relative application (£3,250) was held steady (thanks a lot) and the cost of an application for a refugee dependant relative actually reduced a little. But in many categories, fees went up by 4%, which is still above inflation. That took the fee for an indefinite leave to remain application to £2,389 and a naturalisation application to £1,330. Certain other nationality applications went up 16%.

This is all before the immigration health surcharge is added to the cost of an application. It is set to double at some point in 2018, which will mean an extra £400 per year per migrant for all limited leave visas other than visits (£300 for students).

Many suspect the Home Office makes a hefty profit on these fees. They are correct. The actual cost of processing an ILR application is £243 and a naturalisation application costs the Home Office £372. Most outrageous is the application fee for registering a child as British. The fee in 2018/19 has now broken through the £1,000 barrier, but the actual cost is again £372.

It is not just individual migrants who are being squeezed for fees. The Immigration Skills Charge Regulations 2017 impose on employers who recruit foreign workers from outside the EU a charge of £1,000 per worker per year. A lower charge of £364 per worker per year is applicable to small businesses and universities and some exemptions apply. The charge only applies to new recruits, not existing ones.
