Today is International Migrants Day. The IOM (International Organisation for Migration) keeps track of the dead washing up on the shores of Europe with their Missing Migrants Project. So far this year 3,671 have drowned on the edges of Europe. 5,086 have died worldwide.

The ever rising death toll is clearly insufficient for European leaders, our own included, to change their position now. A friend the other night invoked Macbeth:

“All causes shall give way:

I am in blood Stepp’d in so far that, should I wade no more,

Returning were as tedious as go o’er.”Macbeth, Act 3, Scene 4

Perhaps it is too late for our leaders to change course now; to do so would be to accept responsibility for the lives already lost.
